Significant Infectious Disease Policy

In considering the admittance or denial of admittance of a child who is diagnosed as having a significant infectious disease such as Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS), Aids Related Complex, Cytomegalovirus (CMV), Hepatitis B or positive HTLV-III antibodies, the district shall abide by the decision of the local board of health significant infectious disease committee. This committee consists of the superintendent or designee, the local health director, a physician designated by the local board of health, and the child’s physician.

Any final disposition of the aforementioned committee shall be appeal able by the interested party to the First District Board of Health.

Any change observed in the child’s condition that might require reassessment of the child’s attendance shall be reported to the superintendent, who shall call a meeting of the committee to consider such reassessment.

The district will provide appropriate alternative programs for children who wish to attend school or who may need special programming in the school setting because of the significant infectious disease. An appropriate program will be determined by a committee consisting of the superintendent, principal, the child’s personal physician, the child primary classroom teacher and the child’s parent(s). The special education teacher and other specialists may be included if appropriate. Any information coming before the committee shall be considered confidential.
